She will be presented with a check sponsored by the Zonta Club of New York. The award is given in Miss Stickney's name to the most promising graduate of a college or university whose major interest and undergraduate work has been in theatre.
Frances Bauer is the head of the committee. Discussing this year's selection process, Bauer says this was the most competitive year to date and the committee had to call in a third party to break the tie between Friel and a student at NYU.
The Dorothy Stickney Theatre Arts Scholarship is now in its thirty second year. It is administered by the New York Club of Zonta International, an international service organization of executive women in business and the professions. The annual award covers seven categories of theatre study: actor, director, playwright, costume designer, scenic designer, lighting designer, and stage manager. It is given to a qualified female student graduating from a four year college or university who intends to pursue a career in the the theatre. The recipient is selected based on letter of recommendation, the student's application, and her overall scholastic and artistic standing.
