Festival of Dance at Brown Theatre produced by Julie Adams Strandberg

Brown University Theatre and Sock & Buskin proudly present the Festival of Dance 2015.

Festival of dance posterThis annual dance concert brings together the best work produced by students, faculty, and professional dancers across the city over the past twelve months.

This year's festival features performances by Brown University resident student dance companies, Dance Extension, New Works/World Traditions, and Fusion Dance Company, as well as the choreography of visiting artists from the US and Korea.

Performances by Dance Extension include Battleworks Etude and Terra IncognitaBattleworks Etude is part of the American Dance Legacy Institute’s Repertory Etudes™ Dance Instructional Collection, curated and directed by Carolyn Adams and Julie Adams Strandberg. Repertory Etudes are short dances based on signature works of American choreographers, available to the public with unprecedented access for study, viewing, and performance. Dance Extension was created by the founding director of dance at Brown, Julie Adams Strandberg, on the premise that the training of dancers must include the opportunity to perform, teach, and revisit masterwork.

International dance troupe New Works/World Traditions, will perform Korajuga Gurunsi, a new contemporary West Africa dance piece. New Works/World Traditions is an international dance troupe created by Brown faculty member Michelle Bach-Coulibaly. Through research and cross-cultural exchange, the company develops provocative theatrical experiences that address important political, public health, and social landscapes.

The student-led Fusion Dance Company will perform a new work, Space Coding, by dance alumnus Jamal Jackson ’00. Fusion Dance Company is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic group of men and women who perform a variety of dance styles and do not conform to modern day constraints on body shape, size, dance style, and choreography.

Also on stage in this year's show is a work by visiting choreographer Gwi Young Bae. Gwi Young Bae is a South Korean performer and choreographer who visited Providence last year to set this piece on Brown student dancers. She holds a Ph.D. in Dance & Medicine in South Korea and her choreography has been seen all over the world. Her piece, A Trip to Myself, explores our ability to understand the relationship of life to our existence and to live a life worth living.
