American Dance Legacy Initiative Mini-Fest Brings Community Performers Together

Last month American Dance Legacy Initiative, in partnership with Artists and Scientists as Partners (ASaP), hosted a lecture/demonstration as part of their annual Mini-Fest which brought together dancers, students, educators, and general audiences to discuss and celebrate America’s rich dance heritage together.

The lecture demonstration consisted of three different dance groups performing their interpretation of Donald McKayle's Rainbow Etude. Repertory Etudes are short dances based on signature works of American choreographers. The dance groups who performed were from Brown University Dance Extension; Central Falls High School; and dancers from Dance for Parkinson's classes in Newport RI and New London CT, together with dancers from the DAPpers class (Dancing for the Aging Population) in Providence.

Part of the power of the program lay with each population performing their own version of the etude. This video of the Dance for Parkinson's and DAPpers class performing their interpretation of Donald McKayle's Rainbow Etude was a powerful and transformative experience for everyone in the room.
