Julia Jarcho is a playwright and director from New York City, with the company Minor Theater. Plays include OBIE-winning Grimly Handsome (Incubator 2013 & Royal Court Theatre [London] 2017), Pathetic (NY Times Critics’ Pick, Abrons Arts Center, 2019), The Terrifying (Abrons 2017), Every Angel is Brutal (Clubbed Thumb 2016), Nomads (Incubator 2014), Dreamless Land (New York City Players/Abrons 2011), and American Treasure (13P 2009). She has won an OBIE for Best New American Play (Grimly Handsome), a Doris Duke Impact Award, and a Mark O’Donnell Award. She is an LCT New Writer in Residence at Lincoln Center. Her book Minor Theater: Three Plays is available from 53rd State Press. Minor Theater is currently in residence at HERE Arts Center.
Jarcho is also a theater scholar whose critical work includes the book Writing the Modern Stage: Theater Beyond Drama (Cambridge University Press, 2017) and articles in Critical Inquiry, Modern Drama, and (forthcoming) Textual Practice. She has a PhD in Rhetoric from the University of California at Berkeley, and has been teaching in the NYU Department of English since 2013, where she holds the title of Associate Professor.
